Democracy emerged stronger after JP’s anti- emergency movement: Modi

NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today described emergency as a blot on the country but said the crisis in the political history of the country left democracy stronger and gave birth to a new kind of politics inspired by Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan and other great leaders.

”The Emergency did great harm to the country, but as it sometimes happens that every cloud has a silver lining, it gave rise to a movement for democracy, a movement against corruption, which led to a new political awakening,” Mr Modi said speaking at a function held here to celebrate the 113th birth anniversary of Loknayak.     He said the emergency was slapped on the country to crush freedom and democratic ideas, but it actually led to the birth of a new political generation as a guardian of democracy.     The Prime Minister said it was only a man like Jaiprakash Narayan who could bring out the courage in the masses to take on the might of the existing dispensation in a period when there was a reign of terror and people were afraid of speaking to one another for fear of being put behind the bars under draconian laws like MISA.
