Delhi heats up as mercury crosses 40 C; temperatures may climb to 42 C

NEW DELHI, April 14: Temperatures in the national capital continued to rise over the past week, crossing the 40 C mark in several parts of the city on Thursday.

Safdarjung, Delhi’s base station, recorded a maximum of 40.3 C, 3.5 degrees above normal, up from 39.1 C a day earlier. Among other stations, the Ridge recorded the highest temperature at 41.4 C, while Lodhi Road and Ayanagar logged 40.1 C and 40.4 C, respectively. Palam recorded a comparatively lower 39.4 C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said temperatures may touch around 42 C from Friday onwards, though heatwave conditions are unlikely over the next seven days.

“Maximum temperature may rise by 1-2 C over the next 24 hours, followed by a fall of 1-2 C,” IMD said.

The department has forecast maximum temperatures in the range of 40-42 C from Friday to Sunday. The minimum temperature, recorded at 20.3 C, is expected to rise to around 23 C by Sunday.

Despite the rising heat, IMD has predicted a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of thundery development on Friday.
