Delegation of Sanskrit scholars meets Sopori

SRINAGAR, July 31: A delegation of Shri Kailakh Jyotish Avim Vedic Sansthan led by Dr Chander Moli Raina along with Mahant Rohit Shastri met famous santoor player, Pt Bhajan Sopori in Kashmir.
The delegation requested Pt Sopori to keep working for the development of our ancient culture together with the development of Sanskrit language through his artistic creativity.
Sopori assured the delegation that soon he will compile a CD comprising of Sanskrit songs on santoor instrument and requested the State and Central Government to work in this regard.
The delegation also presented Sopori Raghvaindera Panchang as a souvenir.
Sopori hails from Sopore in Kashmir Valley and traces his lineage to ancient Santoor experts. He belongs to the Sufiana gharana of Indian classical music. Sopori was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1993 and the Padma Shree in 2004 for his contribution to the Indian classical music.
