AKHNOOR, June 26: Sarpanchs of Panchayats Kotli-Tanda and Gandharwan today stressed upon the administration to declare their areas as backward.
The demand was highlighted today during separate Government programmes held at Panchayat Ghars Kotli-Tanda and Gandharwan, during which Rameshwar Singh Charak, Deputy Secretary Agriculture; BDO Akhnoor Bodh Raj; SDO Agriculture Akhnoor Dubey; Supervisors of Anganwari & Asha workers and representatives of other Government departments were present.
Besides, a large number of villagers, Sarpanchs Shamshad Begum and Davinder Singh and Panchs of both Panachayats, were also present on the occasion. They brought out their most urgent local issues before the officials, particularly backwardness of the area because of lack of water, power, road, medical and education facilities and monkey menace. But the major demand was enlisting Tanda-Gandharwan as backward area.
They stressed upon the Government officials for up-gradation of three primary/middle schools, replacement of old transformers and water pipes, provision of better health care facilities and more tube wells to solve water scarcity in this ‘Kandi’ belt.
K P Singh, Chairman of DSS Kissan Cell, from Tanda, also highlighted many issues of the villages. He stressed upon the need to address all the issues at priority to prove efficacy of the current Government. Referring to Prime Minister’s letter addressed to the Sarpanchs asking them to conserve rain water and plant maximum trees, Singh sought Agriculture department’s drive on rejuvenation of old ponds, creating new ponds, soil testing, crop insurance, eradicating monkey menace and supply of quality seeds in the Kandi belt.
He also sought free supply of fruit trees for plantation in Kandi belt, which have local market and have the potential of helping the Kandi dwellers financially. He also demanded compensation policy for the Mango and citrus fruit crop on the pattern of Kashmir Apple crop. Singh said that the long term solution of problems of this Kandi belt lies in constructing ‘Amabaran Kandi Canal’, a project the file of which is biting dust in State Secretariat.
