LEH, May 12: Expecting a special announcement for the Ladakhis during the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ladakh on May 19, District Congress Committee (DCC) Leh urged the Prime Minister to fulfill the promises made to Ladakhis during Parliamentary election in 2014, Assembly election in 2015 and Hill Council election.
Addressing a press conference at Press Club Leh today, DDC president Tsering Samphel flanked by Youth president Tsering Namgyal and Hill Council opposition leader, Gurmet Dorjay said that the promises made during elections were declaration of UT for Ladakh within six month of Government formation at the Centre in 2014, inclusion of Bhoti language in Eighth Scheduled on Indian Constitution, Kailash Mansarovar Road opening but inspite of lapses of more than 4 years nothing has been done. Samphel alleged that a responsible BJP leader Nitin Gatkari had announced to declare UT for Ladakh within 6 months but nothing has been done till date.
The DCC leader further alleged that another important commitment with the people of Ladakh was inclusion of the Bhoti language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India. The ground work for this stands already completed vis-a-vis recommendation of various Himalayan State Governments. It was now only a matter of taking a policy decision and carrying out necessary constitutional processes and we look forward to the Prime Minister making an announcement during his visit now.
Another election promise that was made to the Ladakhis was opening of Kailash Mansrovar Route for pilgrimage and trade at Demchok and Chushul etc in Ladakh. This is one promise which has the potential to transform the socio – economic status of the people of Ladakh radically. “We, however, regret to know that the Prime Minister during his recent informal engagement with the Chinese President Zi Jinping could not take up this important issue. Another equally important electoral commitment made to the people of Ladakh was granting Deemed University status to Central Institute of Buddhists studies, Leh but it also remained unaddressed. .
