DC reviews arrangements for evacuation of families along Indus River

Leh, Mar 1: District Magistrate, Leh, Saugat Biswas today visited Khaltsi Sub-Division along-with a district level team to review the arrangements made for the evacuation of the families along the Indus River who may be affected during the operation to clear the Phuktal river blockage.
The team visited various far flung sites from Beema to Nimoo which might get affected in the event of a sudden breach of the natural dam caused by a landslide on the Phuktal river. The District Magistrate also visited the proposed shelters for shifting of affected families and directed all the concerned officers including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Khaltsi to make available all basic amenities including food, heating arrangements and electricity for the affected families.
The SDM, Khaltsi apprised the DM that a total of 39 families are likely to be affected due to sudden flow of  Zanskar river from Chilling to Beema village in Leh district and arrangements have been made to evacuate them in advance.
The Deputy Registrar Cooperatives and Assistant Director CA&PD will make available rations and essential commodities at the identified locations. Biswas directed Chief Medical Officer to depute medical teams along with adequate medicines at the locations in advance and also conduct survey for any emergency patient / delivery case in this area who may be shifted to Leh before the evacuation begins.
Biswas also directed the Executive Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control to carry out a survey after consultation with the NDMA team and NHPC, Alchi  dam and forecast water levels at various vulnerable spots in case of occurance of an emergency.
During the tour the district level team visited the Alchi Hydel-power Project of the NHPC and had a meeting with the NHPC and NDMA team members. Biswas took stock of the measures to be adopted by the NHPC authorities while releasing water from the Alchi dam so as to prevent a flood-like situation. The Chief Engineer, NHPC assured the District Magistrate, that the safety of villagers downside the Alchi power plant will be ensured, by a well planned scheme of water release during the operation of NDMA to breach the landslide at Phuktal.
The District Magistrate was accompanied by Assistant Commissioner, Revenue, Leh, Superintending Engineer, PDD; Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Khaltsi, Chief Medical Officer, Leh, Executive Engineer, Special Sub-Division, Khaltsi, Assistant Director, CA&PD, Deputy Registrar Cooperative, Leh, BMO Khaltsi, TehsildarKhaltsi and Saspol and other cilvil and police officers.
