DB directs JMC, SMC to file comprehensive affidavit regarding slaughter houses

JAMMU, Mar 2: In the much publicized Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO ‘SAVE’ (Save Animal Value Environment) through its Chairperson Devinder Kaur Madaan alias Rumpy Madaan seeking closure of un-regulated and un-registered/un-licensed slaughter houses/meat shops in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, a Division Bench of High Court comprising Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Sindhu Sharma has directed Jammu Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Municipal Corporation to file submit a fresh comprehensive affidavit clearly stating whether the existing slaughter houses only are to be upgraded, or some new slaughter houses have to be constructed and what is the actual state of affairs in respect of both the matters.
After hearing Advocate Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed for the PIL, the DB directed the presence of Avny Lavasa, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, who shall appear fully prepared on the subject to assist the court.
“It is informed that in Jammu, two slaughter houses, one at Dogra Hall and the other at Gujjar Nagar are in existence and efforts are being made to upgrade them. We are not sure as to whether in addition to these slaughter houses there is any proposal for the construction of a new modern slaughter house in Jammu”, the DB said, adding “the record also reveals that one modern slaughter house is coming up in Srinagar which was expected to be completed within seven to eight months as per the previous order but S S Nanda, Senior AAG informs that there is resistance by the local people and the work has to be stopped”.
The DB directed Advocate Harshwardhan Gupta, appearing of the Jammu Municipal Corporation and Senior AAG S S Nanda, appearing for Srinagar Municipal Corporation to submit a fresh comprehensive affidavit clearly stating whether the existing slaughter houses only are to be upgraded, or some new slaughter houses have to be constructed and what is the actual state of affairs in respect of both the matters. The affidavit in this regard may be filed within two weeks.
