KATHUA, Aug 1: The irate residents of Basohli and adjoining areas whose land has been acquired for construction of Thane dam today staged a protest demonstration at Lakhanpur near here and blocked Jammu –Pathankot National Highway for two and half hours.
The protesters were raising slogans against the Government and demanded immediate settlement of their demands. The protesters said that they have neither been paid compensation for their land which has come under the dam nor were provided the Government job as promised by the authorities then.
They said that for last 12 years they have been running from pillar to post but the authorities failed to settle the issue.
The Highway blockade put the commuters to lot of problem as there was a huge jam upto many kilometers on NH. Later the Tehsildar Kathua, Avtar Singh Jasrotia visited the spot and pacified the protesters. He also arranged a telephonic conversation of the representatives of the protesters with DC Kathua Ramesh Kumar who assured them that the administration will hold a meeting with the dam oustees on August 19 to discuss the issue threadbare so that the same can be taken with higher ups in Government.
