SRINAGAR, Mar 3: The Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK) issued a warning today about the excessive use of headphones, citing potential hearing loss as a consequence.
A spokesperson of the association, the younger generation is particularly at risk due to their heavy use of personal listening devices such as earphones, headphones, and earbuds, which are often connected to smartphones. “Many people listen to music at volumes exceeding the safe limit of 85 decibels for adults and 75 decibels for children, with young people often choosing volumes as high as 105 decibels,” he said.
As a result of this overuse of headphones and earphones, he said, more and more people are experiencing hearing issues. He emphasized that today’s earphone users may become tomorrow’s hearing aid users, with a study published in the journal BMJ Global Health suggesting that up to one billion young people worldwide could be at risk of hearing loss due to excessive use of headphones and earbuds.
He urged people to prioritize safe listening practices to protect their hearing health. “While it is best to avoid using earphones, those who need them should take precautions. This includes limiting the usage time, keeping the volume low, and taking regular breaks,” he said.
March 3rd marks World Hearing Day, which aims to raise awareness of ways to prevent deafness and promote aural care through safe listening practices.
