JAMMU, July 9: Chairperson, Destitute And Handicapped Welfare Association (DAHWA), Surat Singh Sumbria, called on Union Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Jitendra Singh in New Delhi and sought his intervention in laying canals from Ujh to Tajoor in Majalta to meet the irrigational requirements of the farmland.
“The area is just four kilometers away from Dhar Road and the facility will cater to the needs of parts of Billawar and 70 per cent land holdings in Majalta, Udhampur”, Mr Sumbria apprised the Minister, who represents Udhampur constituency in Parliament.
Mr Sumbria said that the people of these areas are migrating for greener pastures in view of limited scope for agriculture due to lack of irrigational facilities. “This has virtually impacted their ancestral avocation that could elevate their economic conditions and give rise to productivity given proper facilities”, he maintained.  He said laying of this canal would help these people utilize their vast lands for agriculture and horticulture to improve their socio-economic profile besides reducing migration.
He urged upon Dr Jitendra Singh to send a team of experts to assess the feasibility of the proposal so that a comprehensive project is formulated in this regard.
The Union Minister assured the chairperson that the possibilities of the project would be examined and the matter would be looked into for necessary action.
