Sir,
It is heartening to read that the Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu, while speaking at a function to present the National Teacher Award, has called for including the cultural heritage of our country and its basic human values in the school curriculum.(DE, September5, 2017).He has also exhorted the people to speak in their mother tongue and learn each others’ languages. There is no doubt, that we have inherited a rich culture from our forefathers. The higher values of life such as respect for elders, compassion, empathy, truthfulness, help for the poor and the needy have been an inseparable part of our rich culture. Our scriptures and other books have numerous stories giving the readers the lesson of being respectful to their elders and teaching the importance of humility and other moral values to the readers. So such inspirational and moral stories should be included in the school curriculum to catch our students while they are young and develop these values in their impressionable minds at an early stage. We have the famous story of King Yudhistra embodying truth, King Harisshchandra embodying duty, Sarvana giving us the moral lesson of serving parents, Sri Ramachandra conveying the lesson of obeying the parents and many others, which can have life long impression on the young minds to turn them into responsible, compssionate, humble and social citizens as they grow up.The Vice President has rightly asked the people to speak in their mother tongue and cited the example of the Presidents of Russia, China, France etc who always speak in their own languages. So the parents must encourage their children to speak their mother tongue and themselves converse in mother tongue with them. The Vice President has also remarked that today good teachers are becoming’extinct species’.The Government ought to ensure that teachers are not deployed for duties other than their primary duty of teaching and that dedicated and hardworking teachers are appreciated for their commendable work to boost their morale.
Yours etc….
Ashok Sharma,
