Srinagar, Oct 29: After improvement in the situation, curfew was today lifted from Srinagar leading to movement of people and transport in the city here while restrictions on public assembly continued in Kashmir.
Curfew was lifted from six police station areas of the city where the curbs were imposed yesterday. The curfew was imposed yesterday to maintain law and order in the wake of the separatists’ call for a march to Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of the city, but was lifted this morning following improvement in the situation.
However, restrictions on the assembly of public under Section 144 CrPc were in place throughout the Valley. The lifting of the curbs led to improvement in the movement of people and transport in the city.
Vendors were back on the streets of the city in TRC Chowk-Batamaloo axis, while many shops were open in the Civil Lines and the outskirts of Srinagar.
However, normal life continued to remain affected in the Valley for the 113th day due to the separatist-sponsored strike.
The shops, business establishments, schools, colleges remained close and public transport was off the roads. However, private vehicles were playing in some areas. In the evening with the opening of shops, traffic movement increased leading to traffic jams at certain places.
Security forces were deployed in strength at sensitive places as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order as well as to instill a sense of security among the people to carry out their day to day activities without fear.
Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in Kaloosa area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district today.
Scores of youth defied restrictions in Kaloosa early morning and staged protests. They hurled stones at police and paramilitary forces who, fired tear smoke to disperse them.
A police spokesman said here that with considerable increase in vehicles and pedestrian rush the situation across the Valley remained normal and under control today. “During the day, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the Valley till filing of this report”, he said.
“The vehicles were seen plying on the roads of the city as well as on the roads connecting different towns and villages. The shops were open and huge number of vendors were seen doing their normal business”, the spokesman said.
He further said that adequate deployment of police and security forces was made at vulnerable points in Srinagar city, in main towns as also on the roads, lanes and by-lanes connecting different places.
