SRINAGAR, Apr 20: A local court in Budgam today ordered the district administration Budgam and the concerned department to provide free gas cylinders to poor and needy belonging to tehsil Charari-e-Sharief.
The directions to the administration came from the District Judge Budgam Raja Shujat Ali in response to a petition moved by the inhabitants of the Tehsil through Amicus Curiae Advocate Javed M Hubi.
The Deputy Commissioner and the CAPD Department have been asked to provide the gas cylinders free to such people under schemes like Pradhan Mantru Ujjwalla Yojana (PMUY) and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY).
The petition had stated that on March 26, COVID-19 welfare package was announced by which poor households will get free cylinders and those who are using big ones (14.2kg) will get three free cylinders in three months-April, May and June this year.
“The area of tehsil Charar-e-Sharief comprises of 16 villages and most of the population is below poverty line ad they have been held eligible under the aforesaid schemes,” the petition read.
It added that the petitioner (Amicus Curiae) got the information from most of the villagers that they have not been provided free gas cylinders since national lockdown.
“…the people in the area are not in a position to approach the concerned authorities during present situation as already administration has notified/declared some areas as red zones in the Tehsil and also restrictions under Section 144 are in force,” the petition reads.
The court of Principal District Judge after entertaining the petition issued notice to the respondents through Whatsapp and in the meantime, Deputy Commissioner Budgam and Director CAPD were directed to seek report from the distributors of LPG operation in the area in respect of free distribution as per the centrally sponsored schemes.
