Corona spike in Ladakh continues: 112 more test positive in UT

Mother, 2 sons among 29 new COVID cases, businessman dies

JAMMU, June 14: Jammu today reported seventh Coronavirus casualty when a 69-year-old businessman from Gandhi Nagar, who was suffering from multiple problems, died in the Government Medical College (GMC) in wee hour of the morning nearly a fortnight after he tested positive for the virus while 29 new COVID cases were reported in the region including a woman and her two sons taking total number of cases to 1163 while 23 more patients were treated and discharged from the hospitals.
In the Union Territory of Ladakh, there was no let up in spike in Corona positive cases for third consecutive day today with 112 more persons reporting positive including 104 from Kargil and eight from Leh. With this, 415 persons have reported positive for the virus in Ladakh during last three days taking total tally in the UT to 549. Lockdown like restrictions were re-imposed after entire Ladakh was declared as Red Zone yesterday following spurt in the cases.
A 69-year-old businessman from Gandhi Nagar, who was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, asthma, acute respiratory distress and severe sepsis and was tested positive for COVID-19 in the GMC Jammu on May 29 soon after his admission, died at 1.30 am today, GMC Medical Superintendent Dr Dara Singh said.
He added that body of the victim was packed as per protocol.
The COVID victim was cremated at Shastri Nagar cremation ground as per the SOP with limited number of family members allowed to join cremation. SHO Gandhi Nagar Gurnam Choudhary led police teams were present at the cremation ground to ensure adherence to the SOP.
This was seventh Coronavirus related death in Jammu region and fourth in Jammu district. Three previous deaths in Jammu district have been reported from Digiana, Trikuta Nagar and Miran Sahib. Rajouri, Doda and Udhampur districts have reported one death each.
Jammu district today reported six more Corona positive cases including 45-year-old male from Jourian, Akhnoor, 24-year-old from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh presently putting up at Gandhi Nagar and 50-year old woman from Nanak Nagar. All three had travel history and were under administrative quarantine on their return here. They have been shifted to different COVID hospitals.
Three others were also travelers and under quarantine.
A 50-year-old woman and his two sons aged 22 and 20, residents of village Jatwal, Samba with travel history of New Delhi today tested positive for the virus in Samba, SSP Shakti Pathak said, adding that they have been shifted from the quarantine centre to COVID Hospital. The trio was asymptomatic and stable.
A total of eight persons reported positive for COVID in Samba district. Rest were also travelers.
Seven persons have tested positive in Doda district today. They included 22-year-old youth from Doda, 35-year-old from Sundra, 53-year-old man from Trown, 27-year-old youth from Kundgam, 27-year-old from Khlhota, 36-year-old from Paryote and 20-year-old boy from Sundru.
All of them had returned to Doda from South Kashmir’s Pulwama district and were under administrative quarantine. They have been shifted to the hospital from the quarantine centres.
Three persons have tested COVID positive in Udhampur district today.
They included a food handler working in a sweet shop aged 62 and a resident of Garhi, a 40-year-old man from Badola and 30-year-old from village Dehari. The last two had travel history and had been quarantined on their return. The two returnees had initially tested negative but during re-sampling after few days, they were reported positive for the virus.
Four more persons have reported Corona positive in Kathua district. Two of them hailed from Hiranagar and one each from Billawar and Janglote (Kathua). All of them were travelers and under quarantine.
Nearly 800 more people today entered Jammu and Kashmir from Lakhanpur, the gateway to the Union Territory.
According to official figures, Jammu region now has 1163 COVID cases but only 745 of them are active. There have been 411 recoveries and seven deaths.
Twenty-three Corona patients recovered today and were discharged from the hospitals. There were maxim 17 recoveries in Jammu district followed by two each in Udhampur and Kathua and one each in Samba and Doda.
Meanwhile, 112 more persons today tested COVID positive in the Union Territory of Ladakh including 104 in Kargil district and eight in Leh.
An official statement by the Union Territory administration said Ladakh now has 549 Coronavirus positive cases including 425 in Kargil and 124 in Leh district and 468 active cases—64 in Leh and 404 in Kargil.
Eighty Corona patients have been treated and discharged in Ladakh with 59 in Leh and 21 in Kargil while there has been one Corona casualty in Leh district.
As many as 90 Corona positive cases in Ladakh have been admitted in COVID Hospitals, nine in Leh and 81 in Kargil while 270 positive cases were in home isolation and 108 in COVID Care Centres.
During last three days alone, Ladakh has reported 415 new COVID positive cases.
