“Khoon Ke Aansu” meaning Tears of Blood is a small novel authored by famous Punjabi writer Laddi Sukhjinder Kaur Bhullar and now translated into Hindi by Popinder Singh Paras and M.S Kaamra. The book has touched very core issues of gender discrimination as also injustice prevalent in our society. Its story-line has dealt with the evil practice of termination of unborn female foetus due to deep-rooted prejudice against unwelcome girl child.
It had disturbed the sensitive mind of Ms Bhullar who brought out the extreme pain, ill-effects of this gross gender discrimination in the society. The issue is being addressed through public awakening, suitable legislative and administrative measures to correct the declining male-female ratio which is a danger signal for the society. Concerted efforts are on to draw the attention of the people at large and now the Government has launched vigorous campaign like Beeti Bachao, Beeti Parahao. Gradually, it is dawning on the common citizens that females too have equal rights and core component of our humanity and it is also important to maintain male-female ratio at natural and rational level.
This book makes absorbing reading as the plot of this novel is finely crafted to sustain the interest of the readers. The language is simple and directly touches the deep emotions of every human heart. This Punjabi novel gained popularity and there was demand for its Hindi edition for wider readership.
Pivotal Message
The translators Popinder Singh “Paras” of J&K Cultural Academy and M S Kaamra have done a good professional job and rendered a great service by bringing out recently the Hindi edition of the famous original Punjabi novel.
It will be beneficial for the Hindi readership. The book has convincingly advocated the message: “ Girl child too have every right to be born and live with dignity a useful life”. Our Constitution provides for gender justice and equality before law with opportunities for everyone. Our society is transforming steadily but surely.
The substance and style of this 88-page book having emotion-packed modern outlook will certainly touch the heart of every reader. I have twice gone through this little volume in a single day and enjoyed its literary merit and also appreciate the main message. The social workers, administrators, planners, academicians, students and all citizens must read it and be instrumental in spreading further the message as male and female are essentially co-partners in advancement of humanity.
