LeT militant killed in Shopian encounter

JAMMU, Oct 2: A cop was martyred and a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was injured in a militant attack in Pulwama district today while in neighbouring Shopian district a militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was gunned down by security forces during an encounter.
A Police spokesman said that militants fired upon a joint party of Police and CRPF in Pinglena area of Pulwama district in which a police personnel Javid Ahmad Dar was martyred and a CRPF personnel was injured.
The injured has been immediately evacuated to hospital for the treatment of his injuries. Senior police officers along with reinforcements reached at the spot. Massive searches were launched against the militants responsible for the attack.
“We pay our rich tributes to the martyr for his supreme sacrifices made in the line of duty. We standby the family of the martyr at this crucial juncture and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured personnel,” the spokesman added.
Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. “Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this attack,” the spokesman said.
In the meantime, security forces killed a LeT militant in Baskuchan area of Shopian today.
Additional Director General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said that the killed militant Naseer Ahmad Bhat belonged to LeT and recently escaped from a cordon in Shopian district. “He was involved in several militant attacks,” he added.
The spokesman said that based on a specific input generated by police regarding presence of a militant in village Baskuchan area of Shopian, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 44 RR of Army and CRPF in the area.
During the search operation, as the search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter.
He said that one militant was killed in the encounter and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He has been identified as Naseer Ahmad Bhat of Nowpora Baskuchan, Shopian.
As per police records, he was a categorized militant and involved in several militancy cases.
“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one AK rifle were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
A case has been registered and further investigation is in progress.
