Cop, 4 held for abetment to suicide

KISHTWAR, Sept 6: In a major achievement, Warwan Police has arrested a Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) cop and his four relatives in abetment to suicide case.
As per police sources, on 23rd July this year, it was reliably learnt that a woman namely Zewara Begum, wife of Mohammad Ashraf of Afti Warwan committed suicide by jumping into the Marusudar river from wooden bridge at Chudraman and her dead body was recovered from the bank of river near Bata Warwan.
On this information, an inquest proceeding under Section 174 CrPC was initiated at Police Station Warwan.
During the course of enquiry, some foul play into the matter was substantiated by the inquiry officer and accordingly the inquest proceeding was converted into a case FIR Number 3/2021 under Section 306 IPC of Police Station Warwan.
Keeping in view the sensitivity of the case, SSP Kishtwar Shafqat Hussain Batt constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SDPO Marwah Nissar Khoja along with SHO Warwan under the supervision of Additional SP Kishtwar Rajinder Singh.
The SIT so constituted collected evidence, lifted some suspects for questioning and accordingly on the basis of the investigation viz-a-viz statement of the witnesses and other evidences, the SIT established that the woman was tortured physically and mentally by her husband and other members of in-law’s family since long.
The accused identified as Mohammad Ashraf (Husband of deceased), serving in J&K Police Department and posted in District Doda, Fayaz Ahmed, brother-in-law, Sharifa Begum, sister-in-law, Sara Begum, sister-in-law and Rafiqa Begum, sister-in-law.
Finally, it was established that all the accused had suspicion over her character and used to torture her physically and mentally, due to which the woman took such extreme step and committed suicide.
All the accused persons have been arrested and put behind the bar. The case has been accordingly challaned in the court of law.
