Contractors shying away from macadamization: Minister

SRINAGAR, Oct 10: Minister for Roads and Buildings, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, today said that only 30-35 percent contractors are coming forward for macadamization of roads in the State after the Government asked them to maintain these roads for three years.
The Minister while replying to a Calling Attention Notice by MLA Altaf Ahmed Wani said that the department is facing problem as the contractors are not coming forward to macadamise the roads as Government has asked them to maintain these roads for three years. “Only 30-35 percent contractors are coming forward”, he told the House.
Bukhari informed the House that a length of 64.45 kms has been macadamized in Pahalgam constituency during the current year and the work is in progress.
The Minister said all the macadamisation works in the Pahalgam constituency are targeted to be completed during current working season.
Bukhari further informed the House that the Okura-Loiseer-Nambal road involves a length of 8.00 kms, out of which 4.00 kms are targeted for macadamization during current year for which the work has been started across Okura Bridge towards Nambal.
The Minister said the road involves a length of 2.00 kms which is not approved for macadamization under any plan at present.
Bukhari said that the Sallar link road having a length of 3.00 kms was targeted for macadamization during current year under NABARD funding. However, due to demolition of encroachments and subsequent public resentment, the macadamization work got delayed as such the road shall be macadamized during the next financial year.
The Minister further said that the Wullarhama-Dalseer road is a part of Hardukuthal-Dalser road approved under NABARD. Out of total length of 6 kms, 2.00 kms have already been macadamized. However, Dalseer portion of the road is under upgradation where the work on construction of 2 RCC culverts is in progress. The stretch is expected to be macadamized during the next financial year, he said.
Bukhari said the road Lidroo having a length of 3.00 kms is approved under district sector. He said the road is targeted for providing / laying of WBM G-III for 0.50 kms. During 2015-16, an amount of Rs. 2.00 lakhs has been allocated for the road, the Minister informed.
