JAMMU, May 2: The Contractors Association here today staged a protest demonstration against the recent floating of tenders by the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department.

“Most I&FC works are not permanent relief but temporary restoration works. These are not even designed works which can be stopped with the flood,” the protesters said.
“Placing crates the Department has fixed the entire responsibility on contractors,” a leader of the Association said adding that in fresh tenders the working period has been reduced from 90 days to 75 days which is objectionable.
The protesters demanded that the Department should let the temporary works go as per previous practice.
“If a contractor has completed a crate it is considered as complete work and if unprecedented flood hits, how is the contractor responsible for that,” they asked.
The protesting contractors said that they are responsible only for the designed works.
They also said that without funds availability, technical sanction and administrative approval, the NIT has been issued by the concerned department.
