This has reference to the news item ‘Cabinet approved Zojila tunnel for Rs 6809 cr, construction in 7 yrs’ DE Jan 4, 2018.
The news has really gladden the hearts of people of Ladakh division who had raised this demand time and again but were not heard by the powers – be with sincerity and seriousness. The people received mere assurances and nothing else.
Now, it seems that the dream of connecting this cold region with rest of India is going to be filled in the near future as the Union Cabinet has sanctioned a staggering amount of Rs 6809 cr in favour of the project. The Zojila tunnel is not merely going to benefit the Ladakh region but the military deployed in the area. In view of the developments taking place at our borders, the importance of this tunnel has grown further. The country can neglect this tunnel only on its own peril.
It may be worthwhile to mention here that Ladakh division remains cut off from the rest of India due to closure of Zojila road during winters. The road experiences huge snowfall during this time, and halts the vehicular movement. During these harsh six months, people here experience many hardship including shortage of medicines and even edible items.
The Zojila tunnel is likely to change the socio-economic situation in the area.
