Conservation of water bodies

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Kavinder for conservation of water bodies’ DE Aug 1, 2017.
The Speaker Legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta has rightly stressed on conservation of water bodies in the State. Due  to official and public apathy, the water bodies are facing existential threat. Many water bodies which were sources of potable water in the Jammu region are on the verge of extinction.
Mansar-Surinsar lakes are shrinking fast and if this trend is not arrested these two water bodies, which are tourist attraction in Jammu, may cease to exist for ever. It will, indeed, be a great loss to people. Besides, due to rapid urbanization, many ponds that dotted the landscape of Jammu city have disappeared.
It is now duty not only of the Government but also of the public to take care of these bodies. The Government must identify and protect all those water bodies that are nearing extinction throughout the State.
In this regard, sufficient budgetary allocations must be made for their conservation. Public awareness campaigns by NGOs and environmentalists must be launched throughout the State.
Yours etc….
Amit Mahajan
