RAJOURI, Feb 5: The District Congress Committee (DCC) Rajouri, under the leadership of its District President, Ashok Sharma, today staged a strong protest against the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, for his alleged derogatory and insensitive remarks regarding the Pir Panjal region.
During the protest, Congress leaders and workers raised slogans and strongly condemned the statement attributed to the Leader of Opposition, terming it an insult to the people of Pir Panjal. The protesters demanded an unconditional apology from the BJP leader for hurting the sentiments of the region.
Addressing the protesters, DCC president Ashok Sharma said that the controversy erupted following remarks made by Sunil Sharma on Tuesday while responding to a question raised by some MLAs in the Assembly concerning the long-pending demand for divisional status for the Pir Panjal region.
He alleged that during the discussion, the Leader of Opposition stated that he did not know what Pir Panjal is or where it is located, which has deeply hurt the sentiments of the people.
Ashok Sharma said that the Pir Panjal region has a rich history and its people have made immense sacrifices for the nation, particularly in safeguarding the borders under challenging conditions. He added that such remarks undermine the sacrifices of the local population as well as the soldiers stationed along the border areas of Pir Panjal.
The Congress leaders demanded that the Leader of Opposition should tender an apology on the floor of the House, stating that his remarks were not only irresponsible but also an insult to the dignity, identity, and sacrifices of the people of Pir Panjal.
The protesting Congress leaders further alleged that the BJP is only interested in vote-bank politics and has consistently ignored the genuine issues and aspirations of the people of the Pir Panjal region. They warned that such insensitive statements would not be tolerated and reiterated their commitment to continue raising the voice of the people at every forum.
