Cong slams SEC, Govt over change in reservation roster

JAMMU, Feb 2: Congress has taken strong exception to the manner in which the Government and the State Election Commission have dealt the genuine objections to the change of reservation roaster for women and Schedule Caste and Scheduled Tribes, resulting into denial of due quota of 1/3rd to the women as well as districts having higher percentage of population of SC/ST.
Reacting to the mechanical manner in which the objections raised to the reservation roaster as per the spirit of the constitution and the Panchayat Raj Act, were rejected, JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that it has resulted into the one’ seat less to the women besides the arbitrary change of original allotment of chairpersons of districts to women. The Government and the commission failed to justify the change of reservation roaster for women from 1,4,7,10 and to the pattern of 3, 6, 9,12 just after DDC Elections.
He said that the 73rd Amendment and the Panchayat Raj Act lays down 1/3rd share to women which comes out to be seven (7) out of twenty (20) districts, thus one seat short of quota reflecting the anti- women approach of the BJP.
Similarly the constitution and the PR Act lays down reservation of proportional basis to SC and ST but this too has been violated and districts with less percentage of their population have been reserved, thus denying the SC/ST their due rights.
The way entire excercise was done in a mechanical manner speaks of the manipulated intention behind the moves, which is unfortunate for the basic democratic institutions, he added.
