UDHAMPUR, May 28: District Congress Committee (DCC) Udhampur, president Sumeet Magotra strongly criticized the BJP leadership and the administration over the worsening sewerage crisis and unhygienic conditions in Udhampur town.
Talking to media-persons here today, Magotra stated that despite crores of rupees being spent, the Udhampur Sewerage Project has completely failed, causing immense hardships to the people of the city. Magotra said that under the project, the contractor was awarded a maintenance contract worth nearly Rs 9 crore for a period of 10 years.
However, the contractor has abandoned the work for the past one month, leaving the entire sewerage system in complete chaos. As a result, manholes are getting blocked in almost every ward of the city, filthy water is overflowing into streets, and in many areas sewage water is even entering people’s houses. He added that during the scorching summer season, residents are being forced to live amidst foul smell, unhygienic surroundings, and the growing threat of diseases.
Magotra further said that due to the complete failure of the concerned agencies and administration, we personally arranged labourers and got several blocked manholes cleaned in different parts of the city to provide temporary relief to the suffering residents. He said it is unfortunate that public representatives and the administration have failed to perform their basic responsibilities, forcing people and social workers to step in and handle the crisis themselves.
DCC leader questioned why concerned BJP MP and the local MLA, who earlier projected the sewerage project as a major achievement, are now maintaining silence over the complete failure of the project. He asked why the elected representatives are not responding to the genuine concerns of the public while people continue to suffer.
Magotra demanded a high-level inquiry into the entire matter and strict action against all those responsible for it. He also urged the administration to immediately restore and repair the sewerage system in the town.
