‘Coordination Committee never formed’

POONCH, May 14: Senior Congress leader and District Congress Committee president Poonch, Shahnawaz Choudhary, has urged the Congress high command to seriously reconsider and re-assess the party’s alliance with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, citing repeated political betrayals, violation of coalition spirit, and the NC leadership’s indifferent stand on key public issues.
In a press statement Shahnawaz said that the spirit of coalition dharma has been repeatedly violated by the National Conference leadership. Despite commitments made during and after the Assembly elections, the Coordination Committee between alliance partners has still not been constituted, reflecting the continued sidelining and ignoring of Congress leadership in Jammu and Kashmir.
He further stated that Congress was assured a safe Rajya Sabha seat as part of mutual political understanding, but the National Conference later backtracked from its commitment, thereby breaching political trust and understanding between alliance partners.
The DCC president also expressed disappointment over the failure of the NC-led Government to fulfill the promises made to the people during the elections. He said that several major poll promises remain unfulfilled despite repeated assurances given to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Raising serious concern over the weakening stand of the National Conference on restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir with constitutional guarantees, Shahnawaz said that Congress has consistently fought on the streets and in Parliament for the rights and dignity of the people of J&K. He said that when Congress leadership organised protests at Jantar Mantar against the BJP Government and simultaneously held demonstrations at district headquarters across Jammu and Kashmir under the campaign “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq”, the National Conference did not support the movement despite INC’s request to join this movement.
He said that such silence on a matter as important as restoration of statehood exposes the lack of seriousness and commitment on the part of the National Conference towards safeguarding the constitutional and democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He urged the Congress high command to take serious note of the sentiments of grassroots workers and take an appropriate decision in the larger interest of the party and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
