JAMMU, July 8: With a view to gear up its activities ahead of next year’s Parliament and Assembly elections, the Pradesh Congress is holding its one day convention here on July 14, which among others would be attended by newly appointed AICC (I) general secretary, Incharge Jammu and Kashmir, Ambika Soni, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad and PCC (I) president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz.
Sources within the Congress told the Excelsior that the Congress would discuss political situation in the State including its relations with alliance partner National Conference and upcoming Parliament and Assembly elections in the State during one day convention of the party in winter capital of the State.
This would be Ambika Soni’s first visit to Jammu after taking over the charge of AICC (I) general secretary, Incharge J&K.
Meanwhile, PCC (I) president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz today reiterated the Congress demand for holding Municipal and Block Development Council (BDC) elections in the State at the earliest.
Prof Soz said the issue of Municipal and BDC elections would be taken up at the Co-ordination Committee meeting of NC and Congress. He said the Congress would try to prevail upon its coalition partner, the NC  for holding the elections.
While speaking to reporters at Congress Headquarters after having an extensive tour of Srinagar city, Prof Soz said that Congress party has raised the issue of conducting these polls as early as possible through its Urban Development Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora in the State Cabinet.
“We are arguing with National Conference that Municipal, District and Block Development Council polls should be conducted without any further delay. Our coalition partner National Conference is also having a perception over the conduct of these polls. We have to follow the democratic process within the coalition before taking a final decision about the conduct of these elections,” Soz said.
Saying that for the development of the Srinagar city the conduct of the civic polls has become extremely important, Prof Soz said that Srinagar city particularly the old Srinagar has been ignored and it will remain utmost priority of the Congress party to restore its beauty.
“The Srinagar city is important for Congress party. Today I visited around one dozen areas of old Srinagar. The purpose was to uplift the moral of the Congress workers and to mitigate the problems of the masses. I assured the people that I will work as a bridge between people and State Government. There was a problem on shifting of garbage dump in old Srinagar. I assured the people that I will personally take up the matter with Urban Development Minister and with Commissioner Municipality so that the matter would be resolved amicably,” said Soz.
Earlier, Prof Soz visited various areas of Iddgah and Zadibal Constituencies.
During the day long tour, Prof Soz was accompanied by Commissioner SMC Dr. G. N. Qasba and other officers who explained to him the measures that the Corporation was taking to save the people from adverse effects of the garbage dump.
