JAMMU, Mar 9: Observing that empowerment of women is a must to ensure the overall development of the society, J&K Mahila Congress president and ex-MLA Indu Pawar today said that the Congress Party is committed for the social, political, and economic empowerment of women in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a meeting in connection with International Women’s Day, Pawar said that women are an important segment in society and their role cannot be ignored.
The function was organized to educate womenfolk about their political, social and economic, and constitutional rights.
“We want to empower women socially, politically, economically, and weaker sections so that they can get their due share in the society and upgrade their living standard,” she added.
She said the aim of organizing such programme was to make women aware of their rights to bring positive revolutionary development.
Former Congress MLA pointed out that it was due to efforts of the Congress leadership that political reservations were granted to women in Urban Local Bodies and Panchayat elections in J&K.
Pointing towards conditions of women under the present regime, Pawar said that the Modi government’s nine years have led to a deterioration in women’s status on several important fronts. The overall pro-corporate thrust of the government’s policies on the economic front, its blatant assault on the constitutional principles of democracy and secularism.
She pointed out that the government’s refusal to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill is an indication of its anti-women approach. “In the 2014 elections, this was the major promise to women”, she said, adding, “The average percentage of women in state assemblies is below 9 per cent. With a single majority in parliament, there was no excuse for the BJP to have refused to bring the Women’s Reservation Bill,” she added.
