JAMMU, Nov 1: A three days annual national conference of Indian Society for Medical Statistics, titled “Recent Advances in Statistical Methods and their Application in Health Sciences”, began today at Jammu University.
Organized by Department of Statistics, JU, the conference was inaugurated by Prof R D Sharma, Vice Chancellor, in presence of Prof Subbakrishna, president of Indian Society for Medical Statistics, Prof J P Singh Joorel organizing chairman of the conference, Prof Rahul Gupta, organizing secretary of the conference, Prof K R Sundram and Prof Anil Mathew, general secretary of the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof R D Sharma stressed upon the importance of Statistical Methods and various Statistical softwares for effective analysis of data from all the fields especially in the field of Medical Sciences. He pointed out that the organizing such conferences is the need of the hours and keeping in view the importance of Statistics in almost every discipline, such conferences should involve the faculty and students of all the disciplines.
Prof Sharma further said that adaptation of modern statistical techniques should be popularized at the local level so that common masses may get benefit of the same.
Prof Subbakrishna deliberated upon the activities of ISMS and stressed on the need for organizing such events while Prof K R Sundram, explained in detail various aspects of a good quality research paper.
On the occasion, Prof R D Sharma also presented awards to the winners of year 2013. High academic excellence award was given jointly to Prof R K Soni and Prof Ganguly. Award for applications of Statistics in epidemiology was given to Prof R P Srinivasan. Prof R N Srivastava award was given to Dr Brijesh Sathian while award for organizing chairman was given to Prof J P Singh Joorel.
Prof Rahul Gupta, HoD Statistics gave a detailed account of the proceedings of the event while Prof J P Singh Joorel presented a welcome address.
