Conference on ‘Buddhism, environment in Ladakh’ held

LEH, May 9: Snow Leopard Conservancy-India Trust in collaboration with Central Institute of Buddhist Studies and All Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA), is organizing 2-day conference on “Buddhism and the Environment in Ladakh” at Choglamsar today.
Drikung Kyabgon Tinle Lhundup, head of Drikung Kagyu Lineage & Ambassador of UN Global Mountain Partnership formally inaugurated the conference in presence of LAHDC Chairman Dorjay Mutup.
Stressing the need for water conservation in the Himalayan region, Kyabgon Rinpoche in his inaugural speech said that water conservation can be done at every village level by constructing small dam at community level and Ice Stupa project at Phyang village is a model project to encourage farmers for water conservation. Terming the soil and water as parents of environment Rinpoche stressed the need for collective efforts to preserve water and soil through action.
Appreciating the organising committee for conducting this seminar on the burning topic guest of honour LAHDC CEC Dorjay Mutup said that through such seminar and discussion, proper solution can be found to tackle the upcoming challenges in Ladakh. Terming the water scarcity as most threatening issue in future he urged every participant to wholeheartedly think about judicious use of water and its preservation for safe future.
He added that road opening from Manali and Zojila side provide easy access to large number of labours and tourists into Ladakh region which not only puts a huge burden to the environment of Ladakh but also influences the lifestyle of locals.
While expressing his concern over environmental issue LGA president  shares his view on environment problems in Ladakh and added that such conference will help to find solutions to address the issue.
Earlier, Snow Leopard Conservancy-India Trust Director Dr Tsewang Namgail while presenting the welcome speech mentioned the purpose of holding conference to find some solution to the global issue of environment.
