The rigours and the wide tentacles of drugs and associated ills being on the increase in Jammu and Kashmir causing due concerns should energise the entire machinery in the Government to take it on from every angle and every side . That being the basic premise of launching containing and controlling measures, however, the fact of the matter is that even the draft of controlling the narcotics is not prepared so far even though the Government has shown its seriousness in the matter but its directions do not seem to have been travelling beyond issuance in this behalf. It is to be visualised that more than 6 lakh people are affected by drugs and shocking aspect of the problem is 90 percent comprise the age group of 17- 33 years.
Should in such a prevailing scenario, the proverbial leaving no stone unturned like efforts not be made in tackling the grave problem affecting the priceless human resources of the UT and the country as well? Not only the seemingly reckless approach is pervading but the other main handicap is the absence of working in tandem and in unison by concerned departments in fighting the malady which is making things complicated. UT Excise Department which ,therefore , was to prepare a composite proposal for control of drugs and de-addiction measures with focus on counselling and awareness, must now expedite it looking to the importance otherwise accorded to the matter in the shape of many high level meetings having taken place wherein senior functionaries of the administration had participated . We must save the addicts and prevent further devastation caused by drugs and narcotics , extra steps needed to be trod.
