SRINAGAR: The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, recorded coldest night of the winter so far after the minimum temperature witnessed a further drop and settled at minus 3.7 degree Celsius, four notches below normal. Weather woes will continue as weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours and there will be no change during the subsequent two days in Jammu and Kashmir, where Leh was coldest at minus 12 degree C.
Though water taps of residential houses were frozen at several places, particularly in the city outskirts, there was no such indication in the world famous Dal Lake, where water did not freeze despite below minus 4 degree minimum temperature.
A Met department spokesman said on Monday afternoon that due to open sky during the night, the minimum temperature remained below normal while the maximum temperature above normal though cold winds also continued.
He said the minimum temperature recorded a drop and settled at minus 3.7 degree C, coldest of the winter so far. It was four notches below normal in the city which was more colder than famed ski resort of Gulmarg, where the minimum temperature was minus 3 degree, he added. There is no immediate relief from the biting cold in near future as weather will remain dry in the state, including Srinagar during the next 72 hours.
The spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy with haze and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 14 degree C, 3 degree above normal and minus 2 degree C respectively in Srinagar during the next 24 hours.
Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, was coldest in the valley at minus 4.1 degree C. The water level in river Lidder passing though Pahalgam, remained low as snow on the upper reaches was frozen. At Gulmarg, which still awaits heavy snowfall, recorded minus 3 degree minimum temperature.
At Kupwara in north Kashmir and Qazigund, gateway of valley in south on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the night temperature was minus 2.8 degree at both the places while tourist resort of Kokernag it was minus 0.9 degree.
At Leh in Ladakh region it was minus 12 degree, he said adding temperature at border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway was not available.
The sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 8 and minus 9 degree respectively at Leh during the next 24 hours.
At winter capital, Jammu the sky would be partly cloudy with haze and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 23 degree and 9 degree respectively during the next 24 hours, he added. (AGENCIES)
