JAMMU, May 26: Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC) in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics Jammu Branch and the Department of Paediatrics, SMGS Hospital, organized an insightful and academically enriching Continuing Medical Education (CME).
The CME witnessed enthusiastic participation from paediatricians, postgraduate students and healthcare professionals from across the region. The academic event was conducted to enhance awareness and strengthen clinical understanding regarding early recognition and timely referral of paediatric oncological conditions. Dr Ashok K Gupta, former HOD Pediatrics, GMC Jammu, was the chief guest for the occasion.
Dr Sanjeev K Digra, HOD Department of Paediatrics, GMC Jammu and President, IAP City Branch Jammu, gave a brief account of work being done in the field of Paediatric Haematology-Oncology in the department of Paediatrics, SMGS Hospital, GMC Jammu.
Dr Anjali Pahuja, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology, RGCIRC, delivered an enlightening talk on the topic “Malignancy or Mimic? – When to Refer”, where she highlighted the importance of differentiating malignant conditions from benign clinical mimics in paediatric practice. She emphasised early warning signs, red flag symptoms, and the significance of prompt referral to specialised oncology centres for improved outcomes and timely intervention.
The second academic session was delivered by Dr Payal Malhotra, Consultant- Paediatric Haematology Oncology & BMT, RGCIRC, on the topic “Decoding the CBC in Office Practice.” Her lecture focused on the practical interpretation of complete blood count parameters in day-to-day paediatric practice and how subtle haematological abnormalities may provide crucial clues toward underlying serious disorders, including malignancies.
The event served as an important academic platform promoting interdisciplinary learning and collaboration between paediatricians and oncology specialists. The speakers engaged the audience with evidence-based insights, case-based discussions, and practical approaches aimed at improving early diagnosis and referral practices in children with suspected oncological disorders.
