JAMMU: Chief Justice of India T S Thakur was today conferred with Degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the University of Jammu at its 16th convocation here.

An emotional Thakur dedicated his degree to his teachers and parents, while recalling his childhood and schooling in Jammu and Kashmir.

“On this occasion, I pay tributes to my teachers and dedicate this degree to them and my parents. This is the second time I am being honoured with a Doctorate Degree.

“First time it was in Lucknow but I am deeply grateful for this honour, as it has come from the university from where I received my LLB,” he said.

Vice President Hamid Ansari was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, also the Chancellor of the Jammu University was also present.

The Governor conferred the Degree of Doctor of Laws on Justice Thakur.

“Over 46 years or so, this University has produced outstanding academicians, jurists, scholars. Jammu and Kashmir is a very small state as compared to other states…Not in term of land or area but population-wise,” Justice Thakur said.

He said the population of Jammu and Kashmir was one tenth of the population of states like Uttar Pradesh but the size of the state has not affected its human resources.

The CJI talked about his humble beginnings and exhorted the students to study hard.

“To the students here, I only say that I am a product of a government school, government college. Our teachers were good. They could create, shape and prepare people for the struggles of life,” he said.  (Agencies)
