JAMMU, Oct 15: Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo, senior BJP and KP leader, took up the issue of selective killings of minorities with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
In his memorandum missive to the President of the UNHRC, Geneva, Nuzhat Shameem he said that, it was gratifying to note that the UN Human Rights Council conducted its regular elections successfully under her leadership. Moreover, the overwhelming majority that India got in the elections to get it elected to the UNHRC was also a ratification of its position at an international level.
The letter further said, “However, recently when the UNHRC was getting ready to conduct its elections, the Pakistan supported terrorists in Kashmir-India launched a massive and selective killings campaign against Hindus and Sikhs in the Valley. This campaign of ethnic cleansing should have been taken Suo Moto cognizance by the UNHRC.
Last year also we had brought up the issue of killings of political grassroot representatives and other minority community members in the Valley to your notice. We earnestly request the Council to view this whole issue in perspective of the continued ethnic cleansing of Hindus and Sikhs in the Valley”.
Chrungoo said the National Human Rights Commission (of India) observed recently in this connection that, “the painful incidents of killing of civilians allegedly by the terrorists are a serious threat to the democratic fibre of the country and people’s right to life, liberty, equality and dignity. Targeted killings of those who are not Kashmiri Muslims is an attempt to keep non-Muslims out of the Valley. It is a gross violation of human rights of minority communities in the Valley, which must be stopped”……”The Commission takes Suo Moto cognizance of the incident and directs issuance of notices to the Chief Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir and the DGP, Jammu & Kashmir calling for a detailed report in the matter including present status of the investigation being conducted and steps be taken or proposed to be taken by the authorities to safeguard innocent citizens’ lives from being killed in a targeted manner”.
