JAMMU, Dec 25: Merry Christmas, marking the birth of Jesus Christ, was celebrated today with fervour and gaiety across the Jammu region. The entire Jammu city was fully decorated to mark the celebrations.
Santa Claus attired in red dress with sporting masks and white feathery caps at every important outlet of the city was the main attraction of children and elders’ alike as families, couples and individuals made merry while shopping and loitering leisurely in the high profile zones of city.
There was heavy rush of people especially belonging to Christian community at Kacchi Chawni, Trikuta Nagar, Gandhi Nagar and Pacca Danga areas who were busy in purchasing Christmas gifts and other items.
The catching feature of a X-Mas celebration was conspicuous of certain Santa Clauses dancing on the tunes of ‘Desi’ (local) tunes and children and young joining the rapture near Monica Super Market Gandhi Nagar.
The Churches decorated with season’s best illuminations and priests dressed in spotless white waiting for the children to assemble for Christmas prayers was another feature that captured everybody’s fancy at St Peter’s Garrison Church at Gandhi Nagar and St Mary’s Church at Residency Road.
The people sang and danced throughout night to celebrate the occasion.
The Christmas trees were decorated extravagantly in different city churches befitting the occasion.
There was a beeline of devotees in all Churches of the city which were adorned beautifully. The main function was held at Gandhi Nagar Church where the rush of the devotees continued since early in the morning. The devotees also joined the candle lighting and mass prayers.
There was also a heavy rush of devotees at the Church in Residency Road, Karan Nagar, Bakshi Nagar, Muthi and other places. Christians localities also wore a festive look with its residents were seen distributing sweets and greeting each other. People of other communities also greeted the members of Christian community on the occasion.
The hustle and bustle in various markets had the added charm of Santa Claus (Christmas Father) seen giving gifts to the people. In the evening large number of people again joined the candle lighting ceremony in the Churches.
The Christmas was celebrated in other towns of the region with full religious fervour and gaiety.
The Christmas was also celebrated across the Kashmir valley with enthusiasm and religious fervour today.
Hundreds of Christians mostly locals, missionaries and tourists gathered at Holy Family Catholic Church, at Moulana Azad Road Srinagar and joined the special prayers and also prayed for the peace and prosperity on the occasion.
