BEIJING, Nov 24: China’s Peking University, one of top universities in the country, has sacked an associate professor for “inappropriate behavior” and sexual misconduct with a foreign student.
The university revoked professor Prof Yu Wanli’s teaching credentials and expelled him from the ruling Communist party unit.
Yu, an associate professor at the School of International Studies of Peking University, was accused of having sexual relationship with the student from Singapore.
The foreign student who charged Yu of imposing himself on her with persistent attempts later became pregnant.
She complained after realising that Yu was already married and had a child, state-run China Daily reported.
It was not the first such incident to occur at a Chinese university.
In October, Wu Chunming, a professor from Xiamen University was dismissed for sexually harassing female students.
A retired associate professor at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Wang Xiaojian, was photographed by netizens sexually harassing two female students in October.
The Chinese Ministry of Education released a regulation on October 9 prohibiting university teachers from sexually harassing students or coercing them into having sex.
Faculty members who violate the regulation will face punishment ranging from a warning and demerit points to demotion, suspension and even prison terms. (PTI)
