With a move to bringing in more laws and procedures in tune and at par with the ones prevailing in other parts of the country, the Chief Justice of the J&K High Court is now the Chancellor of the J&K National Law University.
In this connection, amendments in the relevant Act have been made. It may be noted that the said Law University was established last year under a legislation vide which the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir had to be the Chancellor of the said University.
Not only this, the Lieutenant Governor has assumed the responsibilities of the Chancellor of all the Universities here. In addition to this, the tenure of Vice Chancellors of six UT Government Universities including cluster universities in Jammu and Srinagar, Rajouri and Awantipora Universities stand sliced from six years to three years. The regulations are to be in force with immediate effect. It is pertinent to note here that former Governor of erstwhile state, N N Vohra had reservations about giving his assent to the proposal of the CM being the Chancellor of the Law University instead of the Chief Justice.
