Chhewang firm on his decision, to strive for UT status to Ladakh

JAMMU, Mar 19: Former MP from Ladakh Lok Sabha Constituency, Thupstan Chhewang who has recently resigned from Lok Sabha seat and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well today said that he will not backtrack from the stand taken by him.
In a statement issued from New Delhi, Thupstan Chhewang said that his decision to opt out of electoral politics is final as the electoral politics in prevailing milieu is divisive and hence a distraction.
He said that the vast section of people are concerned over his decision and have expressed their kind sentiments and generous offers about his political future following his resignation from Lok Saba and BJP. He, while acknowledging their feelings however said that there is no going back from his decision.
Thupstan Chhewang said that he will continue to strive for securing the Union Territory status for Ladakh region. In Leh district there is already a formidable support for the demand, he added. He said that he has played a humble role in this regard during the last over three decades.
“My endeavour will be to strengthen this sentiment and persuade the people of Kargil district to come along for a common cause motivated by our shared historic legacy of cultural, linguistic and ethnic affinity. As a native, I am well aware of our sentimental bond further strengthening of which will strengthen the country as a whole”, he added.
