Cement industries openly flouting norms, PCB totally mum

SAMBA, Nov 14: Dozens of cement industries located in SIDCO Phase One, Samba have been openly flouting pollution norms by spreading dust and air pollution, but the Pollution Control Board (PCB) has failed to take strict action against them.
The cement industries have been causing air pollution in the area and is damaging eco-sensitive zone around Basantar river and other adjoining areas. The thickly- populated area around the industrial belt is totally affected by dust pollution, said the locals. People of Samba blamed Government for not taking any action against the grave issue of pollution and the cement factories. They alleged that these industries are not following the norms set by Pollution Control Board (PCB) nor have they installed the pollution control devices.
When trucks carrying cement leave the plant, there is a large amount of dust in the air. Large trees in the area are dying because of the dust collected on the leaves. Factory workers are forced to cover their faces while passing through the area. The continuous pollution emanating from the cement factories is not only telling upon the health of human beings and cattle in the area but also the water of Basantar river has also become poisonous due to the pollution by industries.
“It is grave issue concerning our life and livelihood as our area is catching up infection of life consuming diseases”, said Karn Kumar a social activist of the area. “We demand immediate close the cement industries who openly flout the norms. The cement industries openly flout the norms under the nose of the concerning department”, he added
Due to pollution the people of Samba and adjoining areas have fallen prey to various diseases. If the Department failed to take stern action against the cement industries we will launch agitation against the polluting industries, said the people of the area.
