JAMMU, Nov 27: For 62 years old Thoru Ram of village Alla in Arnia sector of Jammu, the celebrations turned into mourning, when he heard the news that his eldest son namely Sunil Kumar Sabarwal (30) alias Vicky was killed in a fierce gun battle that broke out today between security forces and militants who had sneaked into Arnia border sector of Jammu.
As, the marriage of his middle son (Sanjeev Kumar Sabarwal, a carpenter by profession) was on December 2, the marriage preparations were in full swing. The marriage cards had been distributed and the family members were busy in shopping. Relatives were visiting regularly to celebrate the occasion. But who knew that these celebrations will turn into mourning.
Sunil along with one Rakesh (tractor driver) had gone in the fields to sow wheat crop, when a gun battle ensued between security forces and militants. In a bid to save their life, both Sunil and Rakesh rushed from the spot leaving behind the tractor in the fields. Meanwhile, one bullet hit Sunil in the stomach but somehow he managed to reach to an Army post and fell unconscious. In unconscious condition he was rushed by Army to Bishnah Hospital, from where in view of his serious condition he was immediately referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Jammu, where doctors declared him as brought dead.
Wailing on the death of his son in the front of Emergency Ward of GMCH, Thoru Ram, an ex-Inspector of BSF who retired from services just two years back, said, “What I will tell to his (Sunil’s) mother when she will enquire about her dearest son. What I will say to my 3 years grandson, when he will ask where his father is.”
“What wrong we had done to militants? What is the fault of her young wife and three years old son that the militants shot him dead”, he added.
Meena Devi, wife of Sunil, wailing on the death of her husband was not ready to accept that her husband was no more. “He cannot die… he went to the fields…it (dead body) will be of somebody else’s body”, she said while wailing.
Neeraj Kumar Sabarwal, the youngest brother of the deceased and a student MSc IT, regretted why he asked his brother (Sunil) to go to the fields to sow wheat seeds. “Yesterday I went to fields to sow seeds but as I had to go to bazaar today to purchase new shoes for marriage, I asked him to go to sow seeds. Had I known such a tragedy was going to happen with him I would not have asked him to do so”, he said.
“Tomorrow, we had also planned to organize mundan (hair cutting ceremony) of his (Sunil’s) little son (Praful), who is just three years old. But all is vanished for us. What I will tell him (Praful) when he will ask for his father. He does not even sleep without his father. From where I will bring his father?”, he added with eyes full of tears.
