Celebration of Zorawar Day

Sir,
This has reference to the writeup’Legend of Zorawar Singh'(DE, Apr 15, 2018).It is heartening to read that 15th April is celebrated as Zorawar Day by Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, the erstwhile J&K State Force, to commemmorate the birth and achievements of the architect of present  J&K Rifles and legendery Dogra warrior,Gen Zorawar Singh, who is also known as ‘Napolean of the East’.The learned writer has highlighted many unknown and rare facts about this Dogra hero who deserves the greatest respect and admiration for his role during the erstwhile Dogra rule. The way he was promoted as Inspector, Commissariat of supplies, for all the forts of North Jammu followed by his elevation as Hakim of Reasi, Arnas, and Kussal, bears testimony to the fact that he was  full of intelligence, insight and farsightedness. Then, his  role as Commander of his force in registering victory after victory in the difficult terrain and hostile weather conditions in Ladakh shows his qualities of able leadership and astuteness. The fact that he suppressed so many rebellions in Ladakh region and stationed a contingent of Dogra troops at Skardu tells a lot about his ability and  able planning as the commander of his forces. All this also proves his fighting and leadership skills and power of endurance. But unfortunately,he met a heroic end in Tibet on Dec 12, 1841.The saga of this brave Dogra shows that Dogras are in no way less brave and courageous than other martial communities and races. The life and achievements of this great Dogra General need to be included in the syllabus of history at the school and college level so that the children get inspired by his deeds of bravery and courage and thus, develop love and respect for their motherland.
Yours etc……
