JAMMU, Oct 10: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat today met top Army Commanders at Northern Command Headquarters in Udhampur and 16 Corps at Nagrota and reviewed situation along Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan in Eastern Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir respectively.
Gen Rawat reached the Northern Command Headquarters this morning and met top Army Commanders including Northern Command chief Lt Gen Yogesh Kumar Joshi to review the situation in Eastern Ladakh where the Indian troops are engaged in eyeball-to-eyeball situation with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and LoC in J&K where Pakistani troops were regularly resorting to ceasefire violations pounding forward posts and civilian areas.
Sudden visit of the Chief of Defence Staff to the Northern Command Headquarters assumed significance as India and China are scheduled to hold General Officer Commanding (GOC)-level talks on October 19 on Eastern Ladakh tension.
Only yesterday, the top Military brass had reviewed the prevailing situation in the Eastern Ladakh and the Indian stand at the fresh round of talks. There have been reports that China has deployed some more troops along the LAC.
Though there was no official statement issued by the Army on the visit of Chief of Defence Staff to Northern Command Headquarters as well as Nagrota Corps, which is deployed in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, sources, however, said the situation on both frontiers came up for high-level review in the twin meetings.
At Nagrota Corps, Gen Bipin Rawat was briefed on the situation by GOC Lt Gen Harsha Gupta and other Army Commanders.
There have been regular mortar shelling and firing by the Pakistani troops on the LoC in Poonch and Rajouri districts in which some Indian soldiers have been martyred and few others were injured while the Pakistani troops have suffered heavy casualties and infrastructural losses.
Sources said the Chief of Defence Staff was given detailed briefing on the situation by the Army Commanders.
Sino-Indian tension along Eastern Ladakh has lingered quite long this time with Indian troops refusing to budge and occupying many dominating heights.
In the evening, Gen Bipin Rawat also visited holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji and offered prayers to the Goddess.
On the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts though the Pakistani troops have been regularly violating ceasefire by resorting to shelling and firing with a view to aid and abet infiltration attempts by the militants, the Indian Army has ensured that all such intrusion bids are effectively thwarted.
There has been no successful infiltration attempt on the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts for past several months. On the other, a number of intrusion bids have been foiled by the troops.
