JAMMU, Apr 13: Returning to her roots with a focused healthcare mission, renowned Interventional Pediatric Cardiologist Dr Prerna Bhat has joined hands with the Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCI) Jammu to initiate a comprehensive effort aimed at improving pediatric cardiac care in Jammu & Kashmir.
Dr Prerna Bhat, part of a specialized team from Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Jaipur, engaged in detailed discussions with CCI Jammu on the growing burden of congenital heart disease (CHD), which affects nearly one percent of newborns. A significant number of these cases require timely medical or surgical intervention within the first year of life.
The interaction highlighted the persistent challenges faced by families in the region, particularly the lack of advanced pediatric cardiac facilities. Many are compelled to travel outside J&K for diagnosis and treatment, often leading to delays and financial hardship.
CCI Jammu president Arun Gupta underscored the need for immediate and sustainable measures to strengthen local healthcare infrastructure. He emphasized that accessible and affordable treatment options are essential to ensure better outcomes for children suffering from heart defects.
Following the discussions, a collaborative initiative has been rolled out with a structured plan to improve access to specialized care. This includes organizing regular pediatric cardiac screening camps in Jammu, enabling early detection of heart conditions and timely medical intervention.
The initiative also focuses on bringing expert consultations closer to patients, thereby reducing the need for families to seek treatment outside the region. Efforts will be made to mobilize NGO support to assist economically weaker sections in meeting treatment costs, ensuring that financial constraints do not become a barrier to life-saving care.
Additionally, awareness campaigns will be conducted to educate parents about early symptoms and the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prerna Bhat reiterated her commitment to serving the region and emphasized the importance of early intervention in improving survival and quality of life for children with CHD.
