CCG led by BJP leader Sinha on peace mission meets NC leaders

SRINAGAR:  Concerned Citizens Group (CCG) led by senior BJP leader and former union minister Yashwant Sinha arrived here today to meet the mainstream and separatist leaders besides students to restore peace in the Kashmir Valley.

However, the report prepared by the CCG during its previous visit in 2016 on the Kashmir situation and possible measures to restore normalcy was not even taken into consideration by the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre.

Mr Sinha, after meeting with the working president of the main opposition National Conference (NC), told reporters here today that he was the peace mission to Kashmir.

“We are here after a gap of about eight months to meet leaders of different political parties besides students,” he said. “I have met former Chief Minister and NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah and other leaders last night,” he added. However, he did not give any details of the meeting and said he will be meeting leaders of other political parties during his stay in Kashmir.

Mr Sinha said he will also meet Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. “We are here to meet civil society and youth of the valley and discuss with them how to bring peace. This is in continuation of our previous two to three visits to Kashmir,” he informed.

The CCG had visited the Kashmir Valley last year amid over five-month long unrest following killing of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with forces on July 8, 2016. (AGENCIES)
