JAMMU, June 8: India’s largest refiner, Indian Oil, will expand refining capacity of its state-of-the-art Panipat Refinery to 20.2 MMTPA.
This was disclosed at the maiden visit of the State Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas (I/C), Dharmendra Pradhan to the refinery. Krishan Lal Panwar, (MLA); MP Dhanda (MLA); Sandeep Poundrik, Joint Secretary (Refineries), Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; B Ashok, Chairman; Sanjiv Singh, Director (Refineries); Debasis Sen, Director (Planning & Business Development), Indian Oil; TK Basak, ED (I/c) – Panipat Refinery & Petrochemical Complex, were also present on the occasion.
While appreciating performance of the refinery, particularly its capacity utilization and energy management, Pradhan emphasized the need for effective integration of Refinery operations with Petrochemicals and their positive contribution to develop downstream industries in the region.
Indian Oil’s Panipat Refinery, commissioned in 1998 with refining capacity of 6.0 MMTPA, had its first expansion of 6.0 MMTPA in 2006. The capacity of 3.0 MMTPA was added in 2010. The proposed expansion of refining capacity from 15.0 MMTPA to 20.2 MMTPA is being planned at a cost of Rs 15,000 crore.
Pradhan visited Refinery units and Petrochemical plants. On the occasion, a brief technical presentation was made covering the overview of Refinery Operations, Gross Refinery Margin, Sustainable Development, Synergy between Refinery and Petrochemical, Polymer Products Packaging and Sales, Complex, Corporate Social Responsibility and the future plans.
The Minister also made a visit to Indian Synthetic Rubber Ltd, a joint venture of Indian Oil, TSRC – Taiwan and Marubeni.
Panipat Refinery was built using global technologies from IFP France; Haldor-Topsoe, Denmark; UNOCAL/UOP, USA; and Stone &Webster, USA. It processes a wide range of both indigenous and imported grades of crude oil. The Refinery caters to the high-consumption demand centres in North-Western India including the States of Haryana, Punjab, J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttaranchal, as well as parts of Rajasthan and Delhi.
