Cabinet gives nod for new Metro Policy 2017

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet today approved the new Metro Rail Policy 2017 that will help a large number of cities to realise growing metro rail aspirations.

Briefing reporters after the meeting here, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the new policy promotes ‘Make In India’ in Metro and make these projects cost-effective.

The policy mandates evaluation of other modes of mass transit to ensure selection of least cost public transport model, he announced.

Already, 370 km of Merto is operational in seven cities and 537 km is under construction in 12 cities, Mr Jaitley added. (AGENCIES)
