JAMMU, Mar 31: Sham Lal Basson, Councillor of Ward number 48, Bahu Fort (West) Jammu today said that the bureaucracy has totally failed the ‘Local Self Govt’ in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), particularly during ongoing lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing media persons, Basson said that lockdown of India declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed by all including entire opposition but the administration of J&K UT has totally ignored representatives of Local Self Govt. i.e Corporators of Jammu Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Councillor of District Municipal Councils, members and presidents of Municipal Committees, Block Development Chairmen, Sarpanchs and Panchs.
“The entire Local Self Government has been collapsed due to non-co-operation of UT as well as district administration of Jammu. Mayor of JMC has locked himself in his house instead of making arrangements to fight Coronavirus as well as making available essential commodities at doorstep of people in the municipal limits of Jammu, which is his prime duty,” he said.
Basson said that the Corporation has provided only one pump of 16 litre capacity, one bag of bleaching power and a safaikaramchari to each Corporator for fumigation of mohallas which is not possible manually. He said even during this tough time safaikaramcharis are working without required equipments like gloves, masks and sanitizers.
“Recently, Secretary JMC along with other staff of JMC distributed some ration to families of slum areas of ward numbers 47 and 48 in a pick and choose manner, that too ignoring the concerned councilors,” he alleged. He further added that while Quaternary Ammonium Compounds are more effective that bleaching power but JMC has provided bleaching power for spray.
