JAMMU, Sept 18: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was martyred in firing by the Pakistani troops along the International Border (IB) in Ramgarh sector of Samba district today sparking off fresh tension on the border.
Official sources said the BSF jawans were conducting area domination patrolling ahead of the border fencing in Ramgarh sector at 10.40 am when they were fired upon by the Pakistani Rangers. The BSF jawans immediately took positions and retaliated, leading to exchange of firing, which, albeit, was confined to small arms.
Cross firing continued for about half an hour in which a BSF jawan was hit by the bullets and succumbed to injuries.
“While area on Pakistan side has a protective bundh close to the International Border, our area was undulated, marshy and having thick ‘sarkanda’ growth, which made the task of locating the felled jawan immediately, difficult,’’ sources said, adding initially the BSF jawan was presumed to be missing.
However, after hectic search efforts, the BSF finally recovered body of the martyr jawan late this evening.
“Further action on clearing the area from any Improvised Explosive Device (IED), booby trap etc is being taken by BSF troops,’’ sources said.
