JAMMU, July 24: Authorities today sounded alert after a BSF jawan, who was on leave since July 21, stabbed his colleague at Beli Azmat post on the International Border (IB) in Kanachak sector and decamped with his LMG rifles and 10 magazines. The jawan was untraced till late tonight.
IGP Jammu Zone, Danesh Rana told the Excelsior that police and security forces have been put on alert and asked to watch movement of absconding BSF jawan and capture him. He said he has spoken to Punjab Police as last movement of the jawan was observed in the neighbouring State through his mobile telephone.
“The motive behind stabbing the BSF jawan and decamping with his service weapon and magazines would be investigated by the BSF,” Rana said.
The absconding BSF jawan has been identified as Rajeev Ranjan, a resident of police station Bahadurpur jurisdiction, Darbanga, Bihar while the injured jawan was Raghubir Singh, 34, a resident of Chadwal, Kathua. Both of them belonged to 89 battalion of the BSF.
Reports said Ranjan had been sanctioned leave from July 21 to August 9. He left his Unit on July 21 but didn’t leave for his residence in Bihar and was reportedly hiding somewhere in Jammu City, most likely in a hotel.
He reached Beli Azmat post at around 7 am and stabbed Raghubir Singh with knife at his hands, abdomen and below abdomen and then snatched his service weapon-one LMG and 10 weapons and fled from the spot.
The BSF immediately alerted its post and launched massive search and rescue operation. The injured jawan was shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, where he was responding to the treatment.
Raghubir Singh had one more jawan on the duty with him at Beli Azmat Post but he had gone out on duty.
Sources said the BSF and police have sounded high alert for Ranjan as he was carrying with him one LMG and 10 magazines. His mobile telephone was working up to Punjab and after that it was switched off.
“This indicated that the BSF jawan might be heading towards New Delhi for onward journey to Bihar,” sources said, adding police parties in Bihar and other States have been alert about the movement of Ranjan.
Reasons behind provocative act of Ranjan have not been ascertained so far. Sources said the reasons would be known only when Ranjan is caught and subjected to questioning by BSF and police officers.
Meanwhile, Kanachak police has registered a case against Ranjan under various provisions of law for further investigations.
Sources said the BSF would take disciplinary action against Ranjan shortly.
