SRINAGAR, Feb 1: A boy today set himself on fire in Saida Kadal area of city here during a protest against the demolition drive by Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA).
Dozens of people took to streets in Saida Kadal and blocked the traffic movement on Saida Kadal Bridge after a team of LAWDA arrived to demolish the structures allegedly raised by illegal means on Dal Lake waters.
The people raised slogans against the LAWDA and stopped them from demolishing any structure. During the protest, a boy attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze in presence of police and he was immediately rushed to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital for treatment.
As the people continued to block the demolition drive, police resorted to teargas shelling and baton charge against the protesters, resulting in standoff.
